News | News Archive | Simon Thomas AM becomes Species Champion for the pine marten

27th June 2016

On Wednesday 15th June, The Vincent Wildlife Trust attended the Wales Environment Link (WEL) Species Champions Launch in Cardiff.

The WEL Species Champions initiative asks Assembly Members to lend political support to the protection of Wales’ special and threatened wildlife by becoming ‘Species Champions’. The project aims to highlight the incredible diversity of nature in Wales.

The Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, Simon Thomas AM, met with VWT Chief Executive, Natalie Buttriss, and has signed up to be the Species Champion for the pine marten.

Natalie said: “I’m delighted that Simon has decided to champion the pine marten. This is a mammal species that has experienced a massive decline in Wales. Our Pine Marten Recovery Project is helping to restore the marten population and Simon’s support will help to raise awareness of this woodland specialist”.

Simon is due to visit the Pine Marten Recovery Project sites this summer to meet with staff and view our release sites. We look forward to working together to re-establish a viable, self-sustaining population throughout the wooded landscape of Wales.
